The Awards of Merit Firmly established and occupying a unique position in Hollywood, the annual presentation of Awards of Merit by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has become an outstanding event of the year. Beginning within the industry, the national and international publicity now received indicates the most widespread public interest accorded any single motion picture event. Since its inception in 1927 the competition has recorded and acclaimed the notable progress of screen art. In a large measure the Awards statuette-symbol of recognition and appreciation by their fellow workers-has stimulated and encouraged directors, writers, actors, executives and technicians to achieve motion pictures of sincerity and quality. The Awards have been given to commercial successes and to commercial failures, but always to achievements which the creative personnel has felt represented worthy attainment. The Awards voting is by secret written ballots of the membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, representative of the five creative branches-actors, directors, production executives, writers and technicians. However, eligibility to receive Awards is in no way limited to members of the Academy. The nominations are made by the branch most directly concerned and presumably best qualified to make a competent preliminary selection. That is, the Directors Branch in a separate vote nominates three directorial achievements, the Writers Branch designates the authorship nominees, the Actors Branch the three outstanding performances by actors and three by actresses and so on. An exception is the Production Award upon which a nomination vote is conducted in all Branches. From these nominations the entire membership then selects in each classification the one achievement to be honored by the formal presentation of a trophy at the annual dinner meeting of the Academy. The Awards Presentation Dinner this year will be held on the evening of Thursday, March 5, 1936, at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel. Table of Contents Feature Pictures Eligible for Awards of Merit .
