June 1945 CURRENT ACTIVITIES HOLLYWOOD BOWLMOTION PICTURE NIGHT The Academy has been invited to sponsor a motion picture night in the HollyWoOd Bowl on Saturday evening, August 4th of the current season. The Bowl Ass~ciation in a letter to the Academy Board of Governors said ••• "It is our firm conviction that the Bowl must become a place wherein all people may at some time or other have the opportunity to see and hear the finest examples of all Arts and ArtSciences ••• we are dropping our price levels as low as 25¢ for the first time in many years, and in addition are conducting an active survey in order that we may invite as our guests many who are unable to pay our lowest fee .•• As a truly democratic art centen we feel that a night devoted to Motion Picture Arts and Artists has a rightful place 1n such a center. Provided, only, that such an undertaking be representative of the Motion Picture Industry at its very best, and not just a major studio "show" ••• Our entire Board joins in the hope that this may lead to the beginning of an annual event that could well become unique in enterta-inment history, and that from this approach, we shall establish a fine understanding of each other's ideals and problems." The Academy Board reels that this offers a splendid opportunity for cooperation with a civic organization known throughout the world. The Bowl Association has agreed to pay all expenses of the concert including fees to the artists who apPear as soloists. The MUsic Branch of the Academy has assumed responsibility for the program and plans to date indicate that many phases of picture music will be presented if the concert is decided upon. committee for the Academy MUsic Branch includes: Jerome Kern, Chairman, Robert Emmett Dolan, John W. Green, Abe Meyer, Walter Scharf and Nat Finston, ex-officio as Chairman, MUsic Branch. INTERNATIONAL FILM AWARD An Academy committee has been appOinted to explore the possibility of establishing an International Film Award to be given annually to that picture which contributes most to international gOOdwill and understanding. The Committee, under the chairmanship of Jean Hersholt, is composed of John Cromwell, George Murphy, James Hilton and Wiard B. Ihnen. Letters have been sent to the Society of Cultural Relations, Moscow; Institut Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques, Paris; National Film Board of Canada; British Film Institute, London, and cultural film organizations in other United Nations inclUding Chile, China and Mexico, asking for their views and suggestlons about the establishment of such an award. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES Academy BY-Laws state that one of our pur poses shall be: "To cooperate in educational activities between the public and the industry." The California Association for Adult Education has requested the Academy to serve as liaison between their organization and the film industry. As a start they asked us to
