About this collection

Selection of materials related to the life and career of Rudolph Valentino (1895-1926), including books, pamphlets, lobby cards, and correspondence. One of Hollywood's most popular actors at the time of his sudden death in 1926 at the age of 31, Valentino was known as much for his image and his persona as he was for his onscreen performances. Following his breakthrough role in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921), his performance in The Sheik (1921) affirmed his stardom and defined his onscreen image as an exotic romantic lead. A subject of fascination and gossip in and out of Hollywood while alive, the public outpouring of grief following his death cemented his reputation as one of the most iconic romantic leading men in cinematic history.
